May 10, 2006—A significant portion of the Air Force’s aircraft are flown and maintained by its air reserve components. In two cases—stateside air defense and weather—the Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve Command, respectively, are the sole source of iron. What these graphs do not show are the percent of Air Guard and Reserve air and ground crews that help fly and maintain active force iron. For example, within the strategic airlift category, reserve components provide 53 percent of the aircrews.
