Military Recruits Are Not Dumb and Dumber

January 12, 2006—The Pentagon apparently has gotten fed up with news headlines decrying a lowering of standards among military recruits. Officials released a fact sheet along with the latest recruiting and retention statistics to show it just isn’t so. Per DOD, some 90 percent of military recruits have high school diplomas, compared to only 75 percent of other American youths. And, military recruits significantly beat other youth in math and verbal skills. You will note, though, that the chart here shows a slight drop for 2005 compared to 2004. But, overall, since 1985, the young people entering the military rate higher than their peers.
