Air Combat Command announced the recovery and identification of the remains of Army Air Corps pilot, 1st Lt. Robert L. McIntosh, who went missing after his P-38 crashed in bad weather over Italy in 1944. McIntosh was a decorated pilot who flew missions over three continents during more than two years of service. His remains, which were recovered and identified with the assistance of the Italian non​profit organization Archeologi dell’Aria, have been laid to rest in his hometown of Tipton, Ind. A single bone fragment, identified through DNA testing and dental records, was recovered.
