US European Command on Saturday issued a 72-hour travel restriction on Brussels for all Defense Department personnel, including military, civilian employees, contractors, and command-sponsored dependents and family members outside of Belgium. Those already in Brussels were urged to shelter in place at home. All public schools, the international and American schools, and all metro stations were closed Monday in Brussels, and the US Embassy there said the threat level remained at Level 4—the highest level, indicating a serious threat of imminent attack—in Brussels and level 3 for the rest of Belgium. EUCOM’s ban on unofficial travel to France remains in place until further notice. The command also posted a message on its Facebook page from the US Embassy in Italy, saying that some locations in Rome and Milan have been identified as possible terrorist targets.
