The last A-10s assigned to the 81st Fighter Squadron at Spangdahlem, AB, Germany, left the base for good as part of the squadron's preparations for inactivation in June, announced base officials. The four Warthogs—the last A-10s stationed in Europe—took off for Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz., on May 17, according to a Spang release. "Saying farewell to the 81st makes today a sad day, but it is just another chapter in the life of a fighter squadron,” said Lt. Col. Clinton Eichelberger, 81st FS commander. Over the past few months, the unit has transferred more than 20 A-10s back to the United States. Earlier this month, the squadron flew its last sortie. The Air Force is inactivating the 81st FS as part of its Fiscal 2013 force structure changes. Spang retains its F-16s, which are assigned to the 480th FS. (Spangdahlem report by A1C Gustavo Castillo)
