Kunsan's Airfield Closes for Repairs: The airfield at Kunsan AB, South Korea, shut down on Sept. 13 for two weeks of no flying so that members of the 8th Civil Engineer Squadron, along with South Korean contractors, may carry out repairs, maintenance, and upgrades, announced base officials. Among the activities will be repairing more than 270 spots on the runway where concrete has spalled off, states a Kunsan release. Left unrepaired, such spots can cause significant damage to the tires of the base's F-16s, according to the release. "The spalls on the runway were a major factor in the decision to make the repairs," said TSgt. Caleshia Walker, noncommissioned officer in charge of airfield management. "Crews were replacing tires on a weekly basis to every few days," she added. During the time the runway is closed, some base units, including security forces, will conduct training around parts of the airfield, states the release. (Kunsan report by SrA. Jessica Hines)
