SrA. Michael Malarsie received the Bronze Star with Valor Medal during a ceremony at JBSA-Lackland, Tex., March 30, 2012. Malarsie was honored for his heroic actions as a Tactical Air Control Party member during an intense firefight in Afghanistan in January 2010. He was badly injured and lost his eyesight in this skirmish. Here, Malarsie and Xxon, his seeing-eye dog, on stage during the award ceremony with Maj. Gen. Byron Hepburn, Lackland's 59th Medical Wing commander, who presented Malarsie with the medal that day. Malarsie, who remains on active duty, now administers the Air Force Recovering Airman Mentorship Program.
