The Navy's second X-47B unmanned combat air system carrier demonstrator, designated AV-2, took to the skies on its maiden flight from Edwards AFB, Calif., on Nov. 22, 2011, announced prime contractor Northrop Grumman. Having two UCAS-D airframes will allow the Navy-contractor testing team to begin aircraft carrier suitability evaluations at NAS Patuxent River, M.D., while simultaneously continuing flight-envelope expansion at Edwards, according to the company.
