Building upon the demonstration success of the X-51A Waverider hypersonic research vehicle, the Air Force is exploring ideas for a weapons-suitable hypersonic missile platform, Charles Brink, Air Force Research Lab's X-51A program manager, told reporters, March 15, 2011. No specific program exists yet, but "there are a number of initiatives and plans in the works," he said. The design could be a modified X-51 or a follow-on type. Service officials have said they plan to commence X-51-type weaponization in Fiscal 2012. Here, a B-52 carries the first X-51A vehicle prior to its flight test on March 26, 2010.
