The Pentagon's future family of long-range-strike systems will have a new Air Force bomber as its centerpiece, but will also feature elements like a nuclear-capable cruise missile, supporting aircraft, and perhaps a conventionally armed prompt global strike system. Here, an X-51 hypersonic air vehicle hangs inside an anechoic test facility at Edwards AFB, Calif. Development and testing of the X-51 is laying the groundwork for a potential hypersonic strike missile that would be a component in the future LRS portfolio.
