Farther than the Eye Sees: The Air Force successfully flight tested a new system that allows over-the-horizon audio and data communication with the ground via Milstar satellites. Recently flown for the first time aboard an RC-135 testbed, the Family of Advanced Beyond Line-of Sight Terminal demonstrated the ability to "pass low-data-rate communications between airborne and ground platforms in flight," said Maj. Jeff Miller, USAF's FAB-T test leader. L-3 Communications integrated the Boeing-supplied FAB-T equipment, which includes secure radios, their associate software, antennas, and interface, on the RC-135. "This test validated that size, weight, and power requirements have been satisfied," summed Miller. Ongoing flight tests are aimed at proving the system so that Boeing may begin low-rate initial production in the near future. (Los Angeles release)
