The Air National Guard in early January 2011 renewed its participation in the Air Force's Critical Care Air Transport Team mission of transporting critically injured troops from Southwest Asia aboard military transports or tanker aircraft to major medical facilities in Europe or back in the United States. Each CCATT comprises three trauma specialists. Here, medical personnel load patients onto a Mississippi ANG C-17 at Ramstein AB, Germany, for a flight to the United States. Treated at the nearby Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, CCATT patients routinely pass through Ramstein on their way to hospitals in the US.
