Defense Secretary Robert Gates is expected to announce about $100 billion in specific budget savings as well as some program cuts on or around Jan. 6, 2011, reported Reuters news wire service, Jan. 3, 2011. These announcements possibly could include a new restructuring of the F-35 strike fighter program that adds up to two more years to the aircraft's development phase on top of the 13 months tacked on under a 2010 program revamp. Lockheed Martin officials have said F-35 development progressed well in 2010. In fact, the 10th F-35 test aircraft, an Air Force F-35A model designated AF-4, entered flight testing at Fort Worth, Tex., on Dec. 30, 2010. Here, AF-4 takes off that day.
