The nation faces "some tough choices ahead" when it comes to covering the costs of fielding major new weapons systems that are now just in their infancy, like the Air Force's next bomber and Navy's future ballistic missile submarine, Defense Secretary Robert Gates told the House Armed Services Committee, Feb. 16, 2011. For example, Gates said he wonders if the Air Force, come 2020 or 2025, will be able to afford a new tanker aircraft, the F-35 strike fighter, and a new penetrating bomber at the same time. Here, Gates addresses the committee as Pentagon comptroller Robert Hale, listens in.
