President Obama announced his intent to nominate Leon Panetta to replace Robert Gates as Defense Secretary and Army Gen. David Petraeus to take over for Panetta as CIA director, April 28, 2011. "I cannot think of a group of individuals better suited to lead our national security team during this difficult time," said Obama during remarks at the White House. Gates, shown off of Obama's right shoulder, intends to serve through June 30, 2011. Panetta, to the President's immediate left, would start at the Pentagon in July 2011, if the Senate approves his nomination.
