The new air traffic control tower at Ali Base, Iraq, began operations shortly after midnight on March 12, 2010. The eight-storey tower, shown here, greatly improves air traffic controllers' visibility and overall situational awareness, enhancing the safety of operations at the base. The old tower, standing three stories tall, will remain in place and serve as a backup facility.
