The Air Force would like Congress' blessing to retire 17 C-5A transports in Fiscal 2011, Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz told members of the House Armed Services Committee, Feb. 23, 2010. Schwartz said the Pentagon's new Mobility Capabilities and Requirements Study finds that the Air Force has "some excess capability on the big-airplane airlift side" with its force of 111 C-5s and 223 planned C-17 transports. Keeping these extra C-5As only drains dollars from other priorities and ties down personnel who could be better utilized elsewhere, he said. Here, a C-5A from Air Force Reserve Command's 445th Airlift Wing waits for the next mission as the sun rises at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, Nov. 21, 2009.
