The Air Force and its industry partners successfully placed AEHF-1, the first advanced extremely high frequency satellite, in space on Aug. 14, 2010. A United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket carried the satellite aloft from Cape Canaveral AFS, Fla. AEHF-1 is the first of at least four AEHF military communications spacecraft that the Air Force is procuring to replace the current five-satellite Milstar constellation. AEHF-1 will undergo a period of on-orbit checkout prior to assuming operations. Lockheed Martin is the AEHF prime contractor. Here, AEHF-1 shown at Lockheed’s facilities in Sunnyvale, Calif., prior to its shipment to Cape Canaveral.
