Sen. Kit Bond (R-Mo.) introduced an amendment for the 2010 defense spending bill that would prohibit the Air Force from executing its 2010 fighter aircraft hit list until the service provides lawmakers with "a detailed plan" about the aftermath, according to the Congressional Record for Oct. 1, 2009. Lawmakers are concerned about a potential fighter gap that looms for the Air National Guard, which carries the brunt of the Operation Noble Eagle homeland air defense mission. Here, two F-16s begin to roll into position for a rapid descent during a Noble Eagle training patrol March 16, 2004. The F-16s are assigned to the California Air National Guard's 144th Fighter Wing in Fresno.
