The F-35A conventional takeoff and landing aircraft, designated AF-1, leaves the runway near Lockheed Martin's Fort Worth, Tex., facility during its inaugural flight on Nov.14, 2009. This first optimized—production-equivalent—CTOL variant will enter the flight testing program with two F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing variants as low-rate initial production continues on the company's new moving assembly line.
