In response to questions about cancellation of the Air Force's next-generation bomber, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Michael Mullen cited changing conditions that led them to ignore the 2018 bomber required by the 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review. Both indicated that a better follow-on bomber might be unmanned. In fact, Mullen strongly believes the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter might be the last manned aircraft for the US military.
