Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.) told defense reporters in Washington, D.C., June 24, 2009, that he plans to introduce language in the 2010 defense spending bill that would encourage but not outright direct the Administration to pursue two suppliers to replace the Air Force's KC-135 tanker fleet. He believes that Defense Secretary Robert Gates, despite his preference for a single supplier would accede to Congressional wishes to ensure the replacement program gets underway. Here, A1C Tony Gross and A1C Laurence Tognetti stand guard in front of a KC-135R tanker during a combined operational readiness exercise between the 354th Fighter Wing and the Alaska Air National Guard's 168th Air Refueling Wing on Eielson AFB, Alaska, Nov. 1, 2008. Gross is assigned to the 354th Security Forces Squadron, and Tognetti is assigned to the 354th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron.
