US Special Operations Command boss, Adm. Eric Olson, told lawmakers June 18, 2009, that the Air Force Special Operations Command needs a gunship light aircraft to augment its AC-130 gunships and that the SOCOM analysis of alternatives selected the C-27J as the preferred platform. Problem is the Defense Department cut the planned C-27J buy in its 2010 budget request and there's no current solution to fill SOCOM's need.
