President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev agreed to slash US and Russian nuclear force levels by up to a third over the current ceilings established in the START and SORT agreements during Obama’s visit to Moscow, July 6, 2009. In a joint understanding that lays the parameters for the START follow-on agreement that Obama said he wants to complete by the end of 2009, both parties committed to strategic warhead levels between 1,500 and 1,675, and strategic delivery vehicles between 500 and 1,100.
