Former astronaut and ex-US Senator John Glenn received the 2008 Thomas D. White National Defense Award at a ceremony at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., April 22, 2009. Named in honor of former Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Thomas Dresser White, the award has been presented annually since 1962 to a US citizen who has contributed significantly to national defense and security. Here, Glenn and Commandant of Cadets Brig.
