During the week of Aug. 18, 2008, Boeing told the Office of the Secretary of Defense that it needs six months to put together a competitive bid in the Air Force’s reopened KC-X tanker contest. OSD hoped to conclude the contest at the end of 2008. Here a KC-135, the type of tanker that KC-X will replace, refuels an F-16 fighter during a training mission over Alaska.
