Seeking a Timeline: The incoming chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) has launched a push to establish a redeployment schedule that would bring the majority of US forces home from Iraq within the first six months of 2007. Levin told reporters Monday that he planned to seek a bipartisan resolution that would signal to the Iraqis—and the Administration—that “unlimited and open-ended commitment is over.” He believes that would ensure the Iraqi people take responsibility “to put their nation together and make the political concessions to each other.” Government Executive reports that Levin has yet to talk with members of his committee and that he will await reports from the Iraq Study Group and senior military leaders due next month before drafting his resolution.
